This year, Sawan Shivratri will be observed on 11 August 2026. The auspicious occasion is marked by devotees performing Jalabhishek, or offering water to the Shivling, and worshipping Lord Shiva during Nishita Kaal. There is also a tradition of offering the sacred water collected during the Kanwar Yatra to Lord Shiva on Sawan Shivratri, marking the culmination of the pilgrimage.

According to Drik Panchang, Shivaratri that falls during the month of Shravana is known as Sawan Shivaratri. Since the entire month of Shravana is considered dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva, the Shivaratri observed during this period is regarded as particularly auspicious. However, the most significant Shivaratri, Maha Shivaratri, is observed in February or March, corresponding to the month of Phalguna in the North Indian calendar.

According to astrologers, Bhadra will also be present during Sawan Shivratri this year. It will begin at 5:58 am and end at 3:22 pm, during which time Bhadra will reside on Earth. According to Hindu belief, when Bhadra resides on Earth, it is considered unfavourable for certain auspicious activities, and devotees generally avoid beginning such rituals during this period. However, after taking the auspicious timings into consideration, devotees can perform Jalabhishek of the Shivling at the appropriate time.
