Mumbai Rain Chaos: Heavy Downpour Disrupts Flights, Trains And Traffic; SpiceJet Issues Advisory

SpiceJet has warned passengers of possible flight delays and disruptions in Mumbai due to heavy rain, advising travellers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

Mumbai Rain (6)

Mumbai has witnessed several spells of heavy rain in recent weeks, disrupting flight operations at the city’s airport and causing delays and diversions.

Heavy rain lashed Mumbai and its suburbs early Tuesday, disrupting suburban train services, causing waterlogging in several areas and prompting an airline weather advisory for passengers travelling through the city.

The downpour began around 4 am across Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs and remained intense through the early hours before easing somewhat around 7 am. However, dark clouds continued to gather over the city, with more rain likely through the day.

Mumbai Local Train Services Hit

The heavy showers delayed Harbour Line services by 10-15 minutes, while trains on the Central Railway network were running five to seven minutes late. Western Railway services, however, continued to operate on schedule.

Neighbouring Thane and Navi Mumbai also received heavy rain from the early hours. Thane had been witnessing showers since Monday night and recorded 11.69 mm of rainfall over 22 hours before the rain eased.

Waterlogging was reported at several locations in Mumbra, Mahape and Airoli after intense rainfall, affecting road movement in parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

SpiceJet Issues Mumbai Flight Advisory

Amid the heavy rain, SpiceJet issued a weather advisory warning passengers that adverse weather conditions in Mumbai could affect departures, arrivals and connecting flights.

The airline said bad weather over Mumbai may disrupt scheduled as well as consequential flights, with delays potentially affecting connecting routes. Passengers have been advised to check their individual flight status before leaving for Mumbai airport and stay updated through the airline’s official flight-status page.

Mumbai has witnessed several spells of intense monsoon rain in recent weeks, with heavy showers previously affecting airport operations and resulting in flight delays and diversions.

More Rain, Waterlogging Likely

The ongoing monsoon has also led to waterlogging across several parts of Mumbai, affecting road traffic and other modes of transport.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of intense rainfall in parts of the region and highlighted the possibility of localised flooding and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.

With further showers expected, commuters and air passengers have been urged to plan their journeys accordingly, check traffic and flight updates in real time, and allow additional travel time.
