Rob Reiner’s Son Nick Reiner Indicted for Murder in Parents’ Deaths

Nick Reiner has been indicted for first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents, renowned director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner. Prosecutors allege he fatally stabbed them in December at their Brentwood home and fled the scene.

A grand jury has formally indicted Nick Reiner on first degree murder charges in connection with the deaths of his parents, acclaimed director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner. The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office made the announcement on Wednesday.
According to prosecutors, the 32 year old stabbed both of his parents to death in December inside their home in Brentwood, then fled the scene afterward. He was taken into custody shortly after the killings and has remained in jail without bail ever since.
The new indictment brings two counts of murder against Reiner, each carrying a special circumstance allegation of murder by means of lying in wait. That added element could carry significant weight if the case moves forward to trial. Reiner has entered a not guilty plea to the charges.
What He Could Face
Given the nature of the charges, Reiner could potentially face the death penalty if he’s ultimately convicted. So far, prosecutors haven’t said whether they intend to actually pursue capital punishment in this case.
District Attorney Nathan Hochman spoke about the case in a statement released Wednesday, calling it a profound betrayal carried out by someone who had been loved and trusted by the very people he’s accused of killing. He added that the grand jury’s indictment moves the case one step closer to trial and, in his words, to achieving justice.
The Family’s Grief, in Their Own Words
In April, the couple’s eldest son, Jake Reiner, broke his silence publicly for the first time since his parents’ deaths. Writing in a Substack essay, he described the devastation of losing both parents simultaneously in such violent circumstances, made even more painful by his brother’s alleged involvement. He wrote that losing more than half of his family in one night, in such a violent way, felt almost impossible to process.
What Comes Next
No trial date has been set yet in the case. The legal process is expected to continue as prosecutors decide how they plan to proceed, including whether the death penalty will be on the table.
