Prichard Colon’s decade long fight is over. The former boxer, who never regained consciousness after a brutal 2015 bout, has died at age 33. Colon was 23 and building a solid record, 16 wins against just 1 loss, with 13 knockouts, when he stepped into the ring against Terrel Williams in October 2015. Something went badly wrong. He suffered a severe brain hemorrhage during the fight and was rushed into emergency surgery just to keep him alive. He didn’t wake up for 221 days.

When Colon did eventually come out of the coma, he wasn’t the same. He remained in a persistent vegetative state from that point forward, requiring constant medical attention for the rest of his life. That care continued for more than ten years, as his family stayed by his side through it all.

How His Death Was Announced

There was no press release from a hospital or a team of doctors. Instead, the news came the way so much of Colon’s story had unfolded publicly, through a post on his own Facebook page, written by his father.

“Good morning, my people,” the post began. His father went on to say he had tried everything to grant his son’s dream, a vacation to Puerto Rico, but it never happened. He thanked everyone for years of love and prayers, and asked for continued prayers for the family moving forward.

World Boxing Organization Pays Its Respects

The World Boxing Organization didn’t wait long to respond. WBO president Gustavo Olivieri issued a statement calling the news a moment of profound sorrow for the organization, extending condolences to Colon’s parents and everyone who loved him.

Olivieri’s statement leaned heavily on how Colon was remembered, not for what happened to him, but for how he carried it. He described a life defined by courage and an extraordinary fighting spirit, one that reached people well outside the boxing world. He wrote that the sport itself had rallied around Colon over the years with respect and admiration, never losing hope.

The WBO closed its tribute simply: prayers for his eternal rest, strength for his family, and a promise that his memory isn’t going anywhere. Rest in peace, Prichard Colon.
