Six people, including the suspected gunman, have died and another person is critically injured following a series of shootings in Michigan, police say. Michigan State Police said troopers were called to a home on LaChance Road in Missaukee County at about 11:40 local time on Friday after reports that someone had been shot.

When officers arrived, they found three people dead and another critically injured.

Investigators later discovered another body near a wooded area close to Whitlock Lake and a fifth person dead inside a separate home, police said.

A manhunt was launched for the suspected gunman, identified as 39-year-old Chad Hickman, who police described as armed and dangerous. Hickman was later found dead, bringing the total number of fatalities to six.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shootings and have not released further details about a possible motive.

“This is not only difficult for our investigators and our troopers, but it’s very hard for this community. You know, this type of loss is tragic,” Michigan State Police public information officer Ashley Miller told local media.

She said officers would “conduct a thorough investigation” and keep residents informed as more information became available.

Authorities said there was no ongoing wider threat to the public.
