Australia captain Pat Cummins’ pre-series remarks regarding the significance of Test cricket have changed following Bangladesh’s historic victory in Darwin. Prior to the two-Test series, Cummins discussed Australian players’ willingness to decline rich chances to play for their nation, emphasising their dedication to the longest format but also referring to the situation as a possible ‘tension point’ for the future. However, Bangladesh won their first-ever Test match on Australian territory after shocking Australia in the first Test. A series that started with Cummins talking about Australia’s dedication to Test cricket has taken an unexpected turn thanks to the outcome.

Cummin’s Old Remarks Resurfaces

Ahead of the series, Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia, emphasised his team’s dedication to Test cricket while cautioning about the financial costs associated with selecting the format. His remarks were made in light of the possibility that Australian athletes may decline rich chances to represent their nation.

“The interesting point is, obviously a big Ashes series, all the main guys want to play that series. For example, during the Hundred this season we’ve got two Test matches against Bangladesh. All our guys that will play in that Test match have opted out of going to the Hundred auction, but that’s not going to be the case forever,” Pat Cummins said on the Business of Sport podcast.

“Some of our guys are saying no to half-a-million pounds for 20 days’ work to go and play those two Test matches against Bangladesh. I think it is a tension point. At the moment our guys are so keen to play for Australia that they’re happy to forgo that, but I don’t think we can accept that that is going to be the case forever,” he added.

Bangladesh Picks Up Historic Victory

Following Bangladesh‘s remarkable victory in Darwin, such remarks have received more attention. In the first Test, the visitors secured their first-ever Test victory on Australian territory by defeating Australia by nine wickets. Following Pat Cummins‘ remarks regarding Australia’s dedication to Test cricket, Bangladesh emerged victorious throughout the match, giving the series an unexpected plot twist.

Bangladesh’s triumph was more than just a close shock. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was a key player in their bowling effort as they chased down a target of just 57 on the fourth day to complete a nine-wicket victory. On their third try, it was Bangladesh’s first Test victory in Australia. Bangladesh enters the rest of the series with the assurance that they have already won a historic match in Australia, but Australia still has a lot to deal with before the second Test.
