Meta acts on child abuse content after govt talks; IT Ministry sources say no safe harbour if law violated
Meta has taken steps to address Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) concerns after talks with the government, which made clear that safe harbour protection will not apply if Indian laws are violated.

The government conveyed that no safe harbour protection would be available in cases involving CSAM content if the law is violated.
“The message has gone home,” reported PTI, quoting sources in the IT Ministry. It added that the government has “seen some action on the CSAM issue”.
The government said WhatsApp’s username policy is still under examination. The issue is not unique to WhatsApp, and similar concerns involving other apps are also being looked at.
Social media addiction is another concern being examined by the government. Sources said the government is not trying to censor platforms, but wants to ensure that Indian laws and social norms are followed.
Under the Constitution, reasonable restrictions can be placed on free speech and commercial activities, the sources said.
