Niroshan Dickwella missed out on his maiden Test ton after securing his 23rd half-century
Sri Lankan batter Niroshan Dickwella extended a bizarre world record as his wait for a maiden Test ton continued after scoring the 23rd half-century of his career during the third day of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka on Monday (August 17th) at the Galle International Stadium. The left-handed batter, who made a comeback after more than three years, made the most of his chance to frustrate the Indian bowling attack with the older ball to help the hosts come close to avoiding a follow-on.
The 33-year-old walked out to bat with Sri Lanka in big trouble at 90-5 after India posted a mammoth total of 462 in the first innings. The veteran wicket-keeper batter made 80 runs off 115 balls while putting up a 146-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Sonal Dinusha, who scored his maiden Test ton with a 168-ball 100.
Niroshan Dickwella’s Unwanted Feat
Dickwella’s failure to reach his maiden Test century extended his world record as the player with the most half-centuries in the longest format of the game. This was the 23rd instance in his career that the player reached the milestone but failed to get to the three-figure mark in what is his 55th match.
