Florida’s 2026 primary elections delivered major upsets, with GOP Rep. Cory Mills losing his House nomination and Trump-backed Catalina Lauf also falling short.

Florida voters headed to the polls Tuesday to decide nominees for the US House, Senate and governor’s races in the 2026 midterm elections, with several high-profile and closely watched primary contests across the state.
The biggest upset came in the 7th Congressional District, where two-term Republican Rep. Cory Mills lost the GOP nomination to Ryan Elijah. Mills becomes the fourth Republican House member to lose a primary this election cycle.
Mills was seeking reelection while facing a wide-ranging House Ethics Committee investigation into alleged campaign finance violations and allegations of domestic violence. President Donald Trump endorsed Mills in February, but other prominent Republicans, including Gov. Ron DeSantis, said they did not support him.
Trump also suffered another setback in Florida after his preferred candidate in the 19th Congressional District, Catalina Lauf, lost the Republican primary to Jim Schwartzel.
Ahead of the midterms, Florida Republicans redrew the state’s congressional map to strengthen the GOP’s position in four additional districts. The changes were aimed at shifting the delegation from a 20–8 Republican advantage to a projected 24–4 split.
Angie Nixon Wins Democratic Senate Primary
In the Democratic Senate primary, state Rep. Angie Nixon defeated retired Lt. Col. Alex Vindman in an upset victory. The contest had emerged as another progressive-versus-establishment test within the Democratic Party.
Nixon secured backing from progressive groups, while Vindman raised more than $16 million during the race.
On the Republican side, Sen. Ashley Moody won her primary and advanced to the general election.
The governor’s race also produced a major victory for Trump’s preferred candidate. Republican Rep. Byron Donalds comfortably won the GOP nomination after receiving strong backing from the president. He defeated incumbent Lt. Gov. Jay Collins.
Democrats nominated former U.S. Rep. David Jolly, a Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democrat, for governor. Jolly will now compete in a state that has not elected a Democratic governor in nearly three decades.
Florida has shifted significantly toward Republicans over the past decade. Democrats last won either the state’s Senate or governor’s race in 2012, underscoring the challenge facing the party heading into the 2026 general election.
