From dancing and breaking plates to feeding cats, Madonna’s Greek birthday was as gloriously unfiltered as you’d expect, with a little Alta Moda glamour thrown into the mix.

Madonna knows how to do a birthday.

The pop star turned 68 in Greece this year, swapping the Italian summer she has favoured in recent years for a little Greek drama.

Her celebrations came with all the expected Madonna ingredients: dancing, drinks, plate-smashing, cats and, naturally, an extraordinary dress. “It’s My Birthday! Eat, Pray, Love, Drink, Dance, Break plates, Feed Cats!! Thank you G*D!” she wrote on Instagram.

For the occasion, Madonna wore Dolce & Gabbana’s “Bartolomea” look from the DG Alta Moda Taormina 2026 Collection. The ankle-length organza dress was covered in intricate sequin embroidery. Floral motifs ran across the fabric, framed by ornate Baroque-inspired patterns.

Madonna and love for drama and maximalism came with the flowers. These weren’t the garden variety. Three-dimensional blooms were handcrafted in duchesse satin and embellished with crystals, giving the dress a wonderfully excessive, almost theatrical finish.

Madonna kept the jewellery just as maximalist.

Around her neck was a DG Alta Gioielleria flower-motif necklace, set with tanzanite, morganite, aquamarine and rhodolite garnet. A South Sea pearl and twisted gold wire finished the piece. There were thick golden bangle stacks around her wrist. She also wore a hot pink floral headpiece.

It is a lot. That is precisely the point.

The look sits somewhere between Renaissance fantasy and full-blown Madonna excess. There is nothing quiet about it, and certainly nothing apologetic. The ornate florals, glittering sequins and jewel-heavy necklace feel made for someone who has never subscribed to the idea that less is more.

And the Greek island of Corfu of provided the perfect backdrop. Madonna’s birthday carousel moved between glamorous portraits, candid family moments and the wonderfully chaotic energy of a celebration that clearly did not take itself too seriously.

But the Alta Moda gown was not her only birthday look. Madonna later slipped into a white ensemble punctuated by tiny cut-outs and a statement belt. A parasol completed the look, giving the whole thing a slightly old-world, Riviera-meets-Greece mood.

If the sequins were maximalist Madonna, the white look was a little more playful. Still dramatic, still polished, but with enough skin and attitude to keep it firmly in her territory.

After all, this is Queen Madonna. A birthday is not really a birthday if there isn’t a little spectacle involved.

At 68, she is still dressing for the occasion as though the occasion was invented for her. And honestly, we would expect nothing less.

But while we discuss Madonna and her sartorial style, her relationship with fashion has always been bigger than clothes. After moving to New York from Detroit in the late 1970s, she began as a dancer before turning to music. By the time her self-titled debut arrived in 1983, the Madonna fashion and style was already becoming a phenomenon.

Then came “Like a Virgin”. The white wedding dress, layered necklaces, gloves and rosary became instantly recognisable. It was innocent and provocative at once, playing with the idea of the good Catholic girl gone gloriously bad.

Fans copied the look. Crop tops and chunky crosses became part of the Madonna uniform. And she knew exactly what she was doing. Asked in a 1984 MTV interview if she designed her own clothes, she famously replied, “Do you think someone else could come up with this?”

Four decades later, that confidence still feels very Madonna.
