Sonam Kapoor Makes A Comeback After Her ‘Postpartum Sabbatical’ In A Black Silk Saree And Pichwai-Inspired Dupatta

Back from her sabbatical, Sonam Kapoor drapes a pichwai-embroidered dupatta over a classic black silk saree – proving heritage craft and elegance never goes out of style.

After what she called a “postpartum sabbatical,” Sonam Kapoor is back on Instagram, and true to form, she did not make a subtle comeback. The pictures show her in a black silk saree with a heavily worked pichwai-inspired dupatta, styled with kundan jewellery and a moody, old-world backdrop that looks straight out of a heritage haveli.

Old-School Elegance, Done Right!

The base of the outfit is a plain black silk saree with a striped pallu and a wide gold zari border. It is the sort of weave you would associate with Banarasi silks. Sonam has paired it with a full-sleeved black blouse, which instantly gives the look a more covered-up and structured feel. It is a smart choice for a comeback appearance.

What lifts the whole outfit, though, is the dupatta draped over her shoulder. Instead of the saree’s own pallu doing the talking, she has layered on a separate dupatta with intricate figure work – women in flowing skirts, trees heavy with flowers, and birds, all rendered in gold, ochre, and cream thread against the black silk. It is busy in the best way, almost like a piece of art you could frame.

Pichwai Paintings: The Real Star Of The Outfit

That dupatta is where the story gets interesting, because the embroidery is clearly inspired by pichwai paintings. For those who don’t know, pichwai is a traditional style of cloth painting that originated in Nathdwara, Rajasthan. The word itself comes from “pich” (behind) and “wai” (hanging) – because these large, ornate paintings were traditionally hung behind the idol of Shrinathji, a form of Lord Krishna.

Pichwai art is known for its rich detailing – the lotus ponds, peacocks, cows, gopis (milkmaids), and trees in full bloom, all done in earthy golds, deep greens, and rust tones. It is devotional in origin but has become a favourite reference point in Indian fashion over the last few years, showing up on sarees, lehengas, and now, dupattas like this one. On Sonam’s outfit, you can spot the classic pichwai motifs – the trees, the draped female figures, the birds – worked into the border almost like a hand-painted scroll.

The Jewellery: Kundan And Lots Of It

Sonam leaned more into traditional Indian jewellery here rather than going minimal. There is a heavy kundan choker-style necklace with big polki stones, matching jhumka earrings, a chunky emerald-and-kundan ring, and a black thread bracelet. Everything is gold-toned, which ties in beautifully with the gold work on the dupatta. Nothing here is subtle, but because the saree itself is so plain and dark, the jewellery does not feel like too much – it just fills the space the outfit leaves open.

She has finished the look with a small embellished clutch, sleek middle-parted hair pulled back into a low bun, and soft glam makeup – bronzed eyes, flushed cheeks, a warm nude-pink lip. No sharp winged liner, no heavy contour, just a polished, natural finish that lets the outfit and jewellery do the heavy lifting.

For a first appearance after time away, it is a confident, well-thought-out choice – proof that she has not lost her eye for pairing heritage textiles with a modern, easy silhouette.
