New Delhi: Rain lashed parts of Delhi in the early hours of Saturday, bringing relief from the hot and humid weather, while the capital has now surpassed its normal August rainfall, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The Safdarjung observatory recorded 235.3 mm of rainfall in the first 21 days of August, slightly above the monthly normal of 233.1 mm. The IMD had earlier said Delhi had crossed the August rainfall average, but the figures were later revised for a particular date due to an entry error. The latest data shows the city has now crossed the monthly normal.

More rain is expected over the weekend. The IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies with light rain or drizzle in Delhi during the day on Friday, followed by very light to light rainfall at night. Moderate rain is expected on Saturday.

Temperatures are likely to remain between 25 and 36 degrees Celsius. No red or orange warning is currently in effect for the national capital, although intermittent rain and high humidity are likely to continue.

Despite the recent showers, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 35.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday, which was 1.6 degrees above normal.

Among other weather stations, Palam recorded a maximum temperature of 34.7 degrees Celsius, 0.2 degrees above normal. Lodhi Road recorded 36.1 degrees Celsius, 3.1 degrees above normal, while Ridge and Ayanagar recorded 35 degrees Celsius and 35.7 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Meanwhile, monsoon showers also lashed parts of Haryana’s Jhajjar district. The IMD has forecast partly cloudy skies with the possibility of light rain or thunderstorms in the district until August 24.

The active monsoon has also brought heavy rainfall to several parts of the country, including Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Odisha, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. The IMD has issued colour-coded alerts in several districts, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and related risks.

In Uttarakhand, continuous rainfall in the Garhwal region has disrupted normal life, with water levels in major rivers continuing to rise. Authorities remain on alert as several rain-related incidents have been reported during the monsoon season.

Garhwal Commissioner Anand Swaroop urged people to remain cautious, saying heavy monsoon rains had led to several incidents in the disaster-prone region.

“We are experiencing heavy monsoon rains. Since this is the disaster-prone monsoon season, various incidents are occurring, and water levels in all major rivers have risen significantly,” Swaroop told ANI.

In Himachal Pradesh, persistent heavy rainfall has also affected normal life. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, 166 roads, including National Highway-003, are blocked. Around 130 power transformers and 222 water supply schemes have also been affected.

Mandi is the worst-affected district in terms of road connectivity, with 84 roads blocked due to the adverse weather conditions.

Authorities in areas affected by heavy rainfall have advised residents to remain alert and avoid travelling through vulnerable areas during intense rain.
