Mount Tarawera is the kind of mountain that makes you stop and wonder about its existence and question yourself ‘Is this really Earth?’. This mountain looks closer to another planet than New Zealand because of the jagged ridges, wide craters and streaks of deep red earth. Flyaus, a travel influencer channel on Instagram, recently posted a reel, calling Mount Tarawera New Zealand’s lost volcano. Here you get split rock, exposed ridgelines and loose volcanic scree stretching out in every direction. The mountain sits near Rotorua on the North Island, and sure, it is a good spot for a hike, but there is also a heavy history behind it.

A Volcano That Changed The Landscape Forever
There is a real reason and intense history behind the way Mount Tarawera looks. Back on 10th of June 1886, it erupted for around 6 hours straight. Due to this eruption, a rift tore open across the mountain, running close to 17 kilometres and all the ash and debris buried everything that was nearby. Whole villages were lost, and so were the Pink and White Terraces, a site that had once pulled in visitors from all over the world.
Those scars and remnants of history are what makes this mountain worthy of seeing today. Instead of the usual green hills, you get to see the crater edges, raw volcanic ridges and open stretches of ground that makes you realise how long the scale of eruption actually was. You can also walk through the mountain and see the history yourself through guided tours known as Kaitiaki.

Not Your Typical Mountain Hike
The best part about Flyaus’ reel is that it shows how you can travel down to the centre of the crater and realise for yourself how big the eruption must have been. The guided hike takes you across rugged ridgelines and you can also go to Ruawāhia, the tallest of the mountain’s three peaks. From there, you get a 360 degree view that stretches over Rotorua’s lakes, valleys, and towards the Bay of Plenty. If you are in a rush, you can simply run down towards the volcanic scree to soak in all the history.
You Cannot Explore This Mountain Alone
So, here is the thing about Mount Tarawera – you cannot just show up and hike it yourself. The mountain is closed off to the public. Kaitiaki Adventures is the only operator with access, through an agreement with the local iwi. The reason only they have the access is not just because. Kaitiaki Adventures operates around kaitiakitanga, a Māori idea centred on guardianship, looking after people, places and the land itself. Their hikes mix real adventure with cultural storytelling too, so you get to experience the mountain as well as what it actually means to the people that are connected to it. The whole mountain trip from Rotorua is about 4.5 hours from start to finish, including transport, local guiding and the hike itself.
Sometimes, some of New Zealand’s best spots never make into any travel lists, and Mount Tarawera is proof of that. Flyaus’ reel makes that pretty clear, calling it “The Lost Volcano Of New Zealand”. Mount Tarawera shows a completely different side of the North Island, shaped by fire, history and culture. While exploring, it feels less like ticking off another tourist stop and more like walking through a place with a real story behind every rock.
