The birth anniversary of Lord Krishna is celebrated as Janmashtami. The festival is celebrated on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of Krishna Paksha of the month of Bhadrapada. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born on this tithi under the Rohini nakshatra.

"This is the night the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, appeared in the prison of Kamsa at Mathura. He was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in circumstances the Srimad Bhagavatam describes in extraordinary detail: the dark night, lotus flowers blooming at midnight, a divine light filling the cell," states the website of ISKCON Delhi.

This year, Janmashtami brings a special combination of the Ashtami tithi and Rohini nakshatra. Several auspicious yogas, including Harshal Yoga, Mitra Yoga, Budhaditya Yoga, Hans Yoga and Malavya Yoga, will also be in effect. As a result, worshipping Lord Krishna on Janmashtami is considered particularly significant.
