T.G. Mohandas has spent decades as one of the most recognisable commentators in Kerala. This week he became the news himself, when the Kerala Cyber Police arrested him on the evening of Sunday, 9 August 2026, at his home in Kochi, over remarks he had made in a series of online videos about a group of student protesters.

Mohandas was born in 1955 in Cherthala, in what is now Kerala’s Alappuzha district, into a Konkani family that had settled in the state. He trained first as an engineer, taking a degree in electronics and communication from the College of Engineering in Trivandrum, and worked for a time at the Maharashtra State Electricity Board and the Kerala electronics firm Keltron. He later studied law and practised at the Kerala High Court, where he filed a number of public interest petitions over the years.

His public life, though, has been built on ideas and argument. Associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh since childhood, he became a prominent voice of Hindutva thought in Kerala, serving as convener of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Intellectual Cell in the state and holding positions in several Sangh-linked bodies. He has also been a familiar presence in the Malayalam press and publishing world, associated over the years with Sangh-linked publications. An orator, writer and television commentator, he is a regular face on Malayalam news channels, and in recent years moved much of his commentary to a YouTube channel called Pathrika, where he built a large following for his views on politics and the courts. He counts among his long acquaintances well-known figures in the wider movement, and has travelled and spoken widely across the country.

The case arose from the protests over the NEET paper leak. In late July, demonstrators had gathered at Jantar Mantar in Delhi under the banner of the Cockroach Janata Party, the youth movement demanding accountability for the leak. In a series of videos on his channel, Mohandas spoke about how the protest should have been handled, saying that in his view the authorities should have imposed a curfew, ordered the crowd to disperse and then used force, and that the protesters would have been fired upon. He also made comments about the women taking part in the demonstration.

The videos circulated widely and drew a string of complaints, and the Kerala government ordered an inquiry.

Acting on the complaints, the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police registered a case against Mohandas in late July. On the evening of 9 August, a police team arrived at his Kochi residence and arrested him. Officers seized the electronic devices used to record and upload the videos, and he was taken, after a mandatory medical examination, to Thiruvananthapuram for questioning. His arrest drew reactions from across the political landscape, with his supporters and his critics reading the police action in very different ways.

The matter now moves into the legal process, where the questions will turn on intent, on the content of the videos, and on how the law treats speech of this kind. Mohandas, for his part, has built a long career on saying provocative things in public and defending his right to say them. For now, a commentator who spent decades putting other people and institutions under his lens finds the lens turned firmly on himself, and how the case is resolved will be followed closely by those who agree with him and those who do not.
