President Donald Trump has announced tariffs of up to 100% on imports of drones and their components, saying the United States is too reliant on foreign sources for unmanned aircraft systems. A proclamation signed by Trump imposes a 100% tariff on drones of certain sizes or those with capabilities considered particularly sensitive for national security. Smaller drones without national security capabilities will face a 25% tariff.

The White House said the tariffs will take effect for many products in 21 days.

Drones and components from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff, while imports from the United Kingdom will be subject to a 10% tariff. Products covered by existing trade agreements will be taxed according to those agreements.

Trump said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had examined the impact of imports of unmanned aircraft systems and their components. According to Trump, Lutnick found that foreign producers have a substantial share of the US drone market and that the country is “too reliant” on foreign sources.

The administration also said some foreign drone companies and components pose security and safety risks, while the domestic US industry does not currently produce enough to meet security needs.

The tariffs come as the US military faces pressure on its drone fleet amid the war with Iran, which has now extended beyond five months. According to the supplied reports, at least 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones have been lost during the conflict, leaving the US with roughly one-fourth fewer Reapers than before the war.

The Pentagon has been moving toward cheaper armed surveillance drones that can operate in swarms, while the Trump administration is seeking a $67 billion funding package to cover the costs of the Iran war and replenish depleted military supplies.
