Pakistan has named its first lunar rover Jinnah-1, giving a strong national identity to a mission that will mark the country’s first attempt to place a rover on the Moon.

The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) announced the name on Thursday following a nationwide competition that received more than 4,000 entries.

The name refers to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. Seven participants independently proposed “Jinnah-1”, with SUPARCO selecting the winner through a draw. The winner was 17-year-old Tayyab Karim from Bahawalnagar.


The rover is being developed for Pakistan’s participation in China’s Chang’e-8 lunar mission.

Why Pakistan chose the name Jinnah-1

The rover’s name directly invokes Pakistan’s founder at a moment the country is presenting its participation in lunar exploration as a major technological milestone.

The name was the result of a public exercise rather than an internal decision alone, with SUPARCO inviting entries from across Pakistan. The fact that seven participants independently proposed Jinnah-1 helped make it the selected name, with the eventual winner chosen through a draw.

That gives Pakistan’s first lunar rover a distinctly national identity while also reflecting public participation in the mission.

When will Jinnah-1 go to the Moon?

Jinnah-1 is scheduled to travel to the Moon in 2029 aboard China’s Chang’e-8 mission.

The rover is expected to operate near the lunar south pole, an area that has become a major focus of international lunar exploration.

The region is of particular scientific interest because some areas remain permanently shielded from sunlight. Scientists believe such regions could contain deposits of water ice.

China’s Chang’e-8 mission is part of Beijing’s broader lunar exploration programme and is expected to focus on scientific research and technology development in the south polar region.

For Pakistan, participating in the mission provides an opportunity for its scientists and engineers to gain experience in lunar robotics, planetary science and operating scientific equipment on the Moon.

What will Jinnah-1 do?

The Pakistani rover is expected to conduct scientific observations and experiments in the lunar environment.

A Pakistani rover on a Chinese mission

Jinnah-1 will not travel aboard an independently launched Pakistani lunar mission. Instead, it will be carried to the Moon as part of China’s Chang’e-8 mission.

The arrangement makes the project both a Pakistani space milestone and an example of the space cooperation between Islamabad and Beijing.

For Pakistan, the partnership provides access to a lunar mission and an opportunity to develop expertise in planetary robotics and lunar science without mounting an independent lunar launch.

China, meanwhile, is using Chang’e-8 as part of its longer-term plans for lunar exploration and research, particularly around the south polar region.

Why the mission matters for Pakistan

Jinnah-1 represents an important step for Pakistan’s space programme because it moves the country into lunar surface exploration.

The mission could give Pakistani researchers practical experience in designing, operating and gathering scientific data from a rover on another world.
