PV Sindhu has the chance to rewrite the history books and set a massive world record in front of home fans in New Delhi by winning a medal in the 2026 BWF World Championships.

- PV Sindhu has won five medals in the competition
- Sindhu has two bronze and silver each
- Sindhu won India’s only gold medal in history in 2019
PV Sindhu will aim to create history on home soil when she takes centre stage at the Indira Gandhi Arena in New Delhi during the 2026 BWF World Championships. This marks the first time the national capital is hosting the mega event and only the second instance after the 2009 edition in Hyderabad that the competition is taking place on Indian soil.
Sindhu, who is unarguably the greatest Indian shuttler of all time, will take the field in the mega event on home turf for the first time in her glorious career. The 31-year-old has the chance to create history if he is able to stand on the podium in front of Indian fans.
PV Sindhu Eyes History
If Sindhu wins a medal in this year’s competition, it will mark a sixth medal for her in the history of the World Championships. That will make her the first female shuttler to win six medals in the women’s singles in the mega event in the 49-year history of the competition. Currently, she is tied with four players with five medals.
Most Women’s Singles Medals In BWF World Championships In History
| Player | Medals Won | Year |
| PV Sindhu | 5 | 2013 Bronze, 2014 Bronze, 2017 Silver, 2018 Silver, 2019 Gold |
| Zhang Ning | 5 | 2001 Bronze, 2003 Gold, 2005 Silver, 2006 Silver, 2007 Bronze |
| Akane Yamaguchi | 5 | 2018 Bronze, 2021 Gold, 2022 Gold, 2023 Bronze, 2025 Gold |
| Chen Yufei | 5 | 2017 Bronze, 2019 Bronze, 2022 Silver, 2023 Bronze, 2025 Silver. |
| Carolina Marin | 4 | 2014 Gold, 2015 Gold, 2018 Gold, 2023 Silver |
| Li Lingwei | 4 | 1983 Gold, 1985 Bronze, 1987 Silver, 1989 Gold |
It is worth noting that Chen and Akane are also taking part in the 2026 edition and, like Sindhu, have the chance to set the world record for the most medals in the competition in the women’s singles category. All three shuttlers have the chance to become only the second singles players to win six medals in the World Championships after Ling Dan (5 golds, 2 silvers), who won seven medals in the men’s singles in his legendary career.
For those unversed, Sindhu is the only Indian in history to become a world champion after winning the gold in the 2019 edition at Basel. Only Saina Nehwal (2 medals) has won multiple world championship medals apart from her among Indian athletes.
Sindhu is also the only Indian badminton player with multiple Olympic medals after securing silver in 2016 at Rio de Janeiro and bronze in the 2021 edition at Tokyo.
PV Sindhu Declares Hunger For More Medals
Speaking on the eve of the fixture in a press conference, Indian badminton legend Saina Nehwal claimed she has a hunger to win more medals after a seven-year drought post the historic gold in 2019. “It’s almost seven years since I won a medal at the World Championships, and I hope to get a medal here. I am really excited to have a world championship in front of a home crowd. The Japan win has given me a lot of confidence. I am hoping for good crowd support and will take one match at a time,” said Sindhu.
She was the quickest in history to win five medals in the competition after securing a podium finish in five of her first appearances. However, she was knocked out in the quarter-finals in 2021 and 2025 while suffering a round-of-32 defeat in 2023. The veteran missed out in 2022 due to an injury.
