Cerebras says its new computer boosts AI speed advantage over Nvidia
Cerebras Systems Inc. introduced a new speedier computer built with the company’s chips, saying the device will give it a wider advantage over Nvidia Corp. equipment.

The machine, called the CS-4, is being sampled by a small group of customers and will become more widely available later in the third quarter, the company said Tuesday (August 18) during an event in San Francisco.

The computer will be multiple times faster than its predecessor, which Cerebras already claims is more responsive than systems built with Nvidia’s dominant processors.

The product upgrade is a key step in the company’s bid to challenge Nvidia in the market for AI data center hardware. Cerebras, which held an initial public offering earlier this year, remains a fraction of its rival’s size. But it’s aiming to triple revenue next year.

Shares of the company have gained 19% since the IPO in May.

Cerebras has two major businesses: selling computers outfitted with its chips and offering data center capacity that relies on its technology. With both divisions, the aim is to capitalize on runaway spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure.

At the event, Chief Executive Officer Andrew Feldman and other executives showed demonstrations of the new hardware that they said served up AI-generated results multiple times faster than Nvidia-based alternatives.

Cerebras is pushing the idea of fast-results generation as its key differentiator. By being able to store all of the values that underpin an artificial intelligence model on its giant chip — removing the need to access them over a link to memory silicon — the process is much faster, Cerebras said.

The new computer, a design that will also be able to house updated chips coming next year, has an improved cooling system. That allows it to hold three of the Cerebras’ current processors and run them at a higher speed.

The company has learned from previous versions and come up with a modular design that can be easily upgraded or configured to work with a wider variety of external systems, Feldman said at the event.

The new computer design will help Cerebras keep up with surging demand, he said. For one, it doesn’t require memory chips, which are in scarce supply. And it’s built with a production technology that’s more widely available. That will help the Sunnyvale, California-based company deploy the systems more rapidly, he said.
