Cusk’s new novel, ‘Life of M’, has prompted widespread speculation that its mysterious central actress may have been inspired by Portman herself.

The novel centres on a world-famous actress identified only as “M”, whose life is examined by an unnamed female writer. Reports have suggested that Portman is annoyed by the attention surrounding the book, although people close to her have stressed that she and Cusk are acquaintances rather than intimate friends.

The situation is made more intriguing by Portman’s previous admiration for Cusk.

Portman has publicly engaged with the writer’s work and has interviewed her in the past, helping establish the impression of mutual literary respect. That history makes the current speculation around ‘Life of M’ feel particularly pointed, even though Cusk has not confirmed that Portman is the novel’s direct model.

Life of M may ultimately be less interested in Portman specifically than in the strange condition of being permanently watched.
