PM Narendra Modi Returns To Red For Independence Day 2026: Decoding His Bandhej Turban And Its Sartorial Journey

After a decade of leheriya, saffron, and bandhani experiments, PM Modi returns to where his Independence Day turban tradition began – red Bandhej, reworked for the Red Fort’s 80th year.

This Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the country a colour it has not seen at the Red Fort in years: Red. For India’s 80th Independence Day, he stepped up to deliver his 13th consecutive address to the nation wearing a vibrant red Bandhej turban, and in doing so, he brought his sartorial story full circle.

The 2026 Look: Simple, Yet Symbolic

This year’s turban was a deep red base patterned with tiny white, yellow, and green Bandhani dots. This is the kind of tie-and-dye work that Rajasthan and Gujarat have been known for centuries. It is basically a labour-intensive craft where artisans pluck small sections of fabric with their fingernails and tie them off before dyeing, so that when the cloth is finally opened out, it reveals fine, dotted pattern all over.

He kept the rest of the outfit simple by his own standards – a crisp white kurta-pyjama and a chocolate-brown Nehru jacket. Three small pocket squares in saffron, white, and green were seen as a subtle nod to the tricolour. The overall looks was festive but restrained, letting the turban do most of the talking.

It All Started In 2014

When Modi first climbed the ramparts of the Red Fort as Prime Minister in 2014, he wore a fiery red Jodhpuri Bandhej turban, which was finished with a contrasting green tail. It was a small detail in a historic speech, but it set off something that no one really expected – an annual ritual where India waits to see what the Prime Minister will wear on his head as much as what he will say from the podium. Some of his most talked-about looks are:

2021: Saffron Meets Pink

A rare pairing appeared in 2021, when he wore a saffron turban patterned in red, with a pink tail. The result was unexpectedly cheerful but still formal. A blue jacket and a white stole edged in saffron – which pulled the ensemble together without diluting its playful streak.

2023: Bandhani Once Again

2023’s turban was exuberant. The bandhani print burst into view – yellow, red, green, and a streak of purple. It was arranged in the distinctive dotted squares of the craft and its long trailing end lifted in the breeze as he spoke, adding movement to the moment. A black V-neck jacket over an off-white kurta provided the necessary restraint, allowing the headpiece to keep centre stage.

2024: A Rajasthan Tie-Dye Tribute

In 2024, Modi’s turban told a story straight from the desert. Woven in the leheriya style, which is a tie-dye craft that has travelled through Rajasthani generations, it rippled in orange, yellow and green. It was paired with a white kurta-churidar and a navy bandhgala jacket. The look balanced colour with stately precision – which came as a nod to India’s artisanal wealth, worn before a global audience.

Meanwhile, last year, he wore a saffron turban paired with a white kurta set and nehru jacket. The real showstopper was the saffron turban, unflinching in its brightness. This, in no way, was a decorative flourish. Saffron in India has long been linked with sacrifice and courage. Against the fort’s deep red sandstone, the combination looked both rooted in history and alive with meaning.
