Normally, a quick-commerce platform is trusted by consumers as a fast go-to option that delivers everything from groceries to ice cream to the doorstep, cutting down the hassle of fetching everything from the store. But this trust is based on the maintenance of safety standards and hygiene. However, another incident that occurred at Thane’s Blinkit store has raised a new set of questions about the storage standards that are being followed at the warehouses of these quick-commerce delivery apps.
Rat Found In Blinkit, Thane Warehouse
Allegedly, a rat was spotted at the Blinkit store in Kalyan’s Godrej Hill area in Thane. The rat was found in the ice cream freezer of the establishment and prompted new concerns over food safety and called for action by the FDA authorities. According to the latest reports, this incident has come to the spotlight after a group of young teenagers visited the store in order to buy ice cream. They were simply wandering and browsing through the freezer that is usually stocked with all types of packaged food. The teenagers reported that there was a rat running inside the enclosed compartment, close to the food items.

A rat was allegedly spotted running inside an ice cream freezer at a Blinkit store in Kalyan’s Godrej Hill area in Thane, prompting concerns over food safety and calls for action by authorities. Understanding the potential health risks of this situation, the youngsters promptly recorded a video of the incident on their mobile phones and the footage reached social media and the authorities as well. Since its release, the video has sparked outrage among the local residents and many are demanding strict action from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) against the store.
FDA And Quick Commerce Platforms In Maharashtra
This incident has happened at a time when the food safety authorities have already been scrutinising the facilities linked to all the quick-commerce platforms in Maharashtra. Just last week, the Maharashtra FDA had suspended the licences of 14 such establishments that were associated with Blinkit, Instamart and Zepto in a state-wide inspection drive. Officials have also suspected that in the 86 establishments that are involved in storage altogether, there were a number of safety and hygiene violations found. So far, the FDA has issued 60 improvement notices and have also ordered the temporary suspension of operations at one facility. Out of the 14 suspended licences, 5 belonged to Blinkit, 5 to Zepto and 2 to Instamart.

In all of this debacle, one facility that has come highly under the FDA scrutiny was a Blinkit-related warehouse in Ghatkopar, Mumbai. During a regular inspection, officials found inadequate drainage and waste-disposal arrangements along with issues related to temperature control for frozen products, presence of unprotected lighting fixture in an unpacked-food storage area and poor housekeeping practices. The facility was classified as non-compliant after scoring 34% out of 74%, or 46%, during the inspection.
While the authorities are at work, this raises an important question for consumers who are ordering, because ultimately, they are on the receiving end of products that may have been tampered with or not stored in hygienic conditions. For consumers, convenience cannot come at the cost of food safety. Until stricter checks and clearer accountability are in place, it may be worth paying closer attention to how food and other perishables are packaged, stored and delivered before they make their way to your doorstep.
