Brat Summer was 2 years back and had a solid run. Not that Charli XCX wasn’t a ‘thing’ before that, but the Summer of ’24 is what bumped her up to ‘Mother’ status. Fast forward to 2026 and creating the full companion soundtrack album for Emerald Fennell’s film adaptation of Wuthering Heights, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi – you’re lying if you say you’re not still humming ‘fall in love again and again’ – was the final stride marking her territory in the tier A of pop icons.

Now coming to her latest drop, late last month she released her seventh studio album, Music, Fashion, Film. Among it, was the slacker-rock infused alt track, Card Declined. Give it a listen here.

The track much like most of her releases, is a whole lot of fun and carries an infinite loop of the hook. It’s a lot like Party 4 U from how i’m felling now, her fourth studio album. And we love the debilitation the upbeat tempo tries to mask – but that’s not the point here. The point here is Charli XCX saying that a ‘Mah Jong’ Sofa could very well be the difference between her remaining the same, or finally being able to switch up to a new personality. Now when Charli XCX finds something this affirmatively cool – we listen. Some greats from the world of fashion concurred the same too, way back at its inception.

Now if you’re thinking about the Chinese tile game taking over your social media scroll adverts, you aren’t way too off. Add to this the fact that many of these sets are upholstered in fabrics sourced from Missoni, Kenzo Takada and Jean Paul Gaultier and you have the sky as the limit when it comes to prices – it’s a delicious piece of fashion history rooted in culture after all! But still an easy buy of course if you’re looking to impulsively get rid of some fat bills.

So yes, Charli XCX is right – owning a Mah Jong sofa does mean an instant aura upgrade, no contest, though after that you may have a ‘card declined’ situation for the rest of the month! If you’re hunting for a cheaper option, look in the right places and you’ll find an abundance of DIY boneless memory foam or fleece compression floor modular alternatives. How successfully accurate they look to an original is entirely contingent on your creativity – but let’s be serious, there’s no replacing an original. Ever.
