Stand in front of a mirror and take a closer look. You might notice that one breast sits slightly higher, looks fuller or has a nipple that is positioned a little differently. While it is easy to wonder whether this is normal, the truth is that perfectly symmetrical breasts are far less common than many people think.

Mild differences in breast size, shape and position are completely normal. However, understanding when an asymmetry is simply part of your anatomy and when it signals a change worth investigating is important for breast health.

“Breasts are not meant to be mirror images of each other. Mild differences in size, shape, position or nipple appearance are extremely common,” says Dr. Arnav H. Tongaonkar, Cancer Physician at M|O|C Cancer Care. Breast asymmetry can develop during puberty, when breast tissue does not grow at exactly the same rate on both sides. Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle can also cause temporary swelling, tenderness or changes in fullness.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding may further alter breast size and shape, sometimes leaving a noticeable difference between the two sides. Weight fluctuations and menopause can also influence how breasts look and feel.
