A helicopter crash in a remote part of northern Kenya has left seven people dead, including four Americans. The helicopter went down at 9:13 a.m. on Wednesday while flying from the Loisaba Conservancy to the Ewaso Nyiro area in Samburu County, according to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority. The agency confirmed an investigation into the crash is now underway. According to media reports, Ecuador’s intelligence chief, Michele Sensi-Contugi, was also on the helicopter when it crashed. He too, has lost his life.
Local media reported that the aircraft came down in a rugged stretch of land in the foothills of Mount Ololokwe, a well known tourist spot in the region.
Confusion over who operated the helicopter
Tropic Air Kenya, a safari operator based in the country, said it sent two of its own helicopters to assist with search and rescue efforts. However, the company denied that it owned or operated the helicopter that went down, despite earlier local media reports suggesting otherwise.
Rescue teams respond
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed its emergency response teams joined a broader multiagency effort as crews worked to reach the crash site, which sits in difficult, hard to access terrain.
Seven people died in the crash, including four American nationals. The identities of those killed have not been released.
Part of a troubling pattern
Kenya has seen helicopter crashes occur with growing frequency in recent years. The country’s tourism industry relies heavily on domestic helicopter operators to transport visitors to remote and scenic locations, including areas like Mount Ololokwe.
