At a time when Ravi Kishan has unexpectedly become one of the internet’s favourite meme templates, another member of his family is attracting attention for a very different reason. His daughter Ishita Shukla has none of the exaggerated expressions, viral dialogues or cinematic flamboyance currently filling Instagram feeds. Her story is built around discipline, early mornings, military training and a career choice that took her away from the entertainment industry surrounding her family.

Ishita’s decision to enter the armed forces first drew national attention in 2023. Now, as interest in Ravi Kishan has surged again, her unconventional path has returned to the spotlight, even earning appreciation from actor R Madhavan.

Who Is Ishita Shukla?

Ishita is one of Ravi Kishan and Preeti Shukla’s four children. Unlike the familiar star-child route into acting, she had been preparing for a life connected to military service for years before the public began talking about her.

She was a cadet with the 7 Girls Battalion of the Delhi Directorate of the National Cadet Corps. In January 2023, she was selected for the NCC contingent participating in the Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path. The selection itself was competitive: 659 female cadets took part in the camp, with 148 chosen for the marching contingent. Ravi Kishan said at the time that Ishita had already been working towards serving the country for three years.

A few months later, news emerged that the then 21-year-old would join the defence forces through the government’s Agnipath recruitment scheme.

It is worth making an important distinction. Ishita did not publicly abandon an established acting career. Rather, she chose military service instead of following the most obvious professional route available to the daughter of a successful film actor. That distinction arguably makes her choice more interesting, not less.

From An NCC Cadet To The Armed Forces

Ishita’s NCC background places her decision in a longer story than the usual “star kid rejects Bollywood” headline suggests.

NCC training is centred on discipline, physical preparation, leadership and exposure to a regimented way of life. Republic Day Camp is regarded as one of the organisation’s most prestigious activities, with cadets selected through several stages before reaching the national event.

For Ishita, therefore, the armed forces were not a sudden rebellion against her father’s profession. Her years in the NCC indicate a career direction that had already been taking shape.

Ravi Kishan publicly expressed pride when her selection became known. At the time, actor Anupam Kher also congratulated Ishita and said her decision could serve as an example for millions of young women interested in serving in the defence forces.

The story received another burst of attention this week when R Madhavan shared news about Ishita on his Instagram Story, drawing fresh attention to her decision to choose the armed forces over the entertainment world. Madhavan’s response has particular resonance because he has himself spoken publicly about his connection with the NCC and respect for military service.

His appreciation also helped move the conversation beyond Ishita simply being “Ravi Kishan’s daughter”. The more compelling part of her story is the independence of the decision itself.

She grew up close enough to cinema to understand what it could offer. Yet the professional identity she pursued involved uniforms rather than costumes and training grounds rather than film sets.

The renewed curiosity around Ishita arrives at an amusing moment for her father.

Ravi Kishan has spent recent weeks appearing almost everywhere on Indian social media. Clips of his dancing, singing, interviews, expressions and famously theatrical delivery have been repackaged into thousands of memes and reels. Some users have jokingly labelled him “India’s Henry Cavill”, while his viral reach has become so extensive that European football clubs Juventus and Borussia Dortmund have participated in the trend.

Kishan appears delighted rather than embarrassed by his accidental second life as a meme star. He has said that the trend was never manufactured and credited younger audiences with responding to his natural personality. He has also argued that both admiration and trolling are temporary, and that changing oneself simply to avoid becoming a meme would mean sacrificing authenticity.

There is something rather fitting about the contrast.

The father is currently travelling across Instagram through expressions, dialogues and jokes. His daughter has resurfaced in the public conversation because she chose perhaps the least performative career available to her.

Celebrity children are often discussed through inheritance. Who gets launched, who resembles a famous parent, who will continue the family profession and who benefits from an established surname?

Ishita Shukla’s story runs in the opposite direction.
